Aloe Vera – The Herb of Goodness

Aloe Vera is a magical herb for the skin. It can remove stretch marks, boils, blisters, bleeding wounds and smoothen dry skin caused by eczema. Here are some of the other uses of Aloe Vera according to Ayurveda.

The Sanskrit name for aloe vera is ‘kumari’ which according to Ayurveda is indicative that the plant contains the health energy of a young woman and that it tones the female organs. Fresh aloe vera gel can effect and control all the three doshas.

 

 

It is extensively used to provide relief from burns, rashes and other inflammations through topical application. The skin absorbs aloe vera up to four times faster than water. It unclogs the pores of the skin and supplies the skin with moisture and nutrients. Its antiseptic property also helps in eliminating all skin infections. It also helps in the removal of tan, treatment of sunburn and stretch marks.

When taken internally aloe vera cools pitta dosha. purifies blood, balances the menstrual cycle to reduce excessive bleeding, cools the eyes and regulates digestion.

Dried and powdered leaf of the plant has been mentioned in ancient texts to be used as a uterine purifier.

It is suggested that to a newborn child, a mixture of honey mixed with fresh butter or with aloe vera juice is given to purify its digestive tract and hasten the expulsion of meconium.

Aloe vera has also traditionally been used to help people wean off alcohol.

A bitter wine made of aloe vera juice known as kumari asava In place of hard liquor or other alcoholic drinks, an alcohol addict can take small amounts of this light, dry wine. This can help the alcohol addict get rid of the urge to consume alcohol and strengthen the damaged liver.

A paste made from three other herbs along with aloe vera can be used for treating anemia. The paste is amde with
equal parts of Shatavari, Brahmi, Neem and Loha Bhasma along with with 2 spoons of aloe vera gel. This is essentially effective in providing relief for a person suffering from pitta type anemia.

Aloe vera can also help clear up acne, especially when you add a little honey to it. It is also very soothing to apply directly to wounds, or areas of your skin where there is itching and/or inflammation. Research backs up the ancient uses of aloe vera especially for skin treatment.

These are some of the healing and therapeutic properties of Aloe Vera. Interestingly, the plant can grow almost anywhere in the world as it doesn’t require special conditions for cultivation. Hence, it has been used across cultures and continents.
